The term "Jack-in-the-box"
The term Jack-in-the-box usually refers to a toy consisting of a box containing a figure on a spring which pops up when the lid is opened. The term has been used in various metaphoric and other ways, often to refer to a particular person or as a title of a musical, literary or theatrical work, in this case sometimes spelled Jack in the Box.

The original text
The performance text of the piece was published in two volumes by DALRO (Dramatic, Artistic, and Literary Rights Organisation), the piece's music and lyrics in 1972 and the libretto in 1973.
