The Cruter by John Matheus (1887-1983), an African-American intellectual. A two-act play about the recruiting of rural blacks for the factories of the northern USA cities. First published in Opportunity (USA) in 1926. Performed by the Pitch Black Follies at the Bantu Men’s Social Club in February 1938, as part of an evening’s entertainment. Billed as “The Recruiter” by J.Mathews [sic]. Later anthologized in Hatch and Shine (eds) Black Theater USA: Forty-five plays by Black Americans 1847-1974. (Macmillan, 1975)
