He was born Nicholas Visser in the USA, where he grew up and did undergraduate studies at Kenyon College. He came to South Africa in 1966,
He died in 1998.

He co-edited (with Tim Couzens) the volume H.I.E Dhlomo: Collected Works (Johannesburg: Ravan Press, 1985.).
