Biography
Born in Pietersburg (now Polokwane) on 15 November 1939, he studied film making in London and began his career making documentary films. Turning to feature films, he joined forces with Athol Fugard to produce and direct three films based on scripts by Fugard, and going on to make a few more films and numerous TV series for British television companies.
Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance
His stage production of A Lesson from Aloes was staged Upstairs at the Market in 1980, after having played to full houses at London's National Theatre.
He worked with Athol Fugard, directing three films with scripts by Fugard: Marigolds in August, The Guest and Boesman and Lena. He also made a film with a script by Nadine Gordimer, City Lovers.
Awards, etc
Marigolds in August was awarded a Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 1980.
