Sophie Roux (1907 - 1985) was an author of novels and a playwright.

Biography

Born Sophia Jacoba Elizabeth Loubse was born on 16 October 1907 in the district of Tulbagh, whereafter the family moved to Griqualand-West, where her father began to farm with horses. They later also lived in the Transvaal, where she went to school at Wolmaransstad, with the later author, Eitemal as one of her teachers.

She trained as a teacher and in the 1930s served on the editorial staff of the newspaper Die Vaderland. Having started writing as a child, she gradually became a well-known writer of prose, mainly novels and short stories.

She was twice married, first to Hennie Roux of Paarl in 1925 and after his passing, to Ryno le Sever van der Riet. She passed away on 9 July 1985 in Yeoville in Johannesburg.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

She wrote one play Moenie Breek Nie produced and directed by Leonie Pienaar for Kaapstadse Afrikaanse Toneelvereniging (KAT) on Friday, 21 June 1940, and was also performed on tour by Pierre van Vuuren and his company during the 1940.
