Cape Town Highlanders

The Cape Town Highlanders was a military regiment raised in Cape Town by descendants of Scottish immigrants to South Africa in 1885.

The regiment

Over the years the regiment saw active duty during the Bechuanaland Campaign (1896), the Anglo-Boer War, including the relief of Kimberley. In 1906 the Duke of Connaught and Strathearn became colonel-in-chief of the regiment and the regiment's name was thus changed to the Duke of Connaught and Strathearn's Own Cape Town Highlanders. In August 2019 the regiment was again renamed, now as the Gonnema Regiment.

Theatrical and cultural activities

The Cape Town Highlanders Pipe Band is a regular feature of Cape Town festive occasions, and has over the years travelled throughout the country and around the world performing at countless military tattoos and parades.
