Billy Trengove (1921-2012). Teacher, lecturer, tranlator, actor, director.

Biography

Born in Stellenbosch and christened William Edwards Trengove, he was popularly known as Billy or "Dr T". Studied at the Stellenbosch Gymnasium, and later the University of Stellenbosch. An immensely popular character in Stellenbosch, he became an English teacher in 1942 and then in the early 1970s became a Senior Lecturer in English in the Education Faculty and in the 1990s the Journalism department at the University of Stellenbosch.

Died on 16th December, 2012 in Stellenbosch.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

He was also an amateur actor and director and an active member of the Libertas Theatre Club in Stellenbosch. Also performed in the Little Theatre in Cape Town. Among the work he directed was The Reluctant Debutante in 1978, which won the Cape Times Award for best amateur production of the year in the Western Cape. In 1979 he and Frans Smuts organised a pageant as part of the Stellenbosch Tercentenary Celebrations.
