The Courland was a mail ship on the England-South Africa route in tfrom the 1870s.

The occasional shipboard performances and entertainments were apparently offered on occasion. For example, according to the Cape Argus of 28 December, 1872, a shipboard Christmas Eve entertainment was given, consisting of a "farcical charade" by officers and passengers, based on the word "Indignation". The name of a certain Mr Gibbs is specifically mentioned as the author of the fine text.
