He studied at Rhodes, Oxford and Harvard and became a lecturer in English at Rhodes University and later head of the English Department at the University of the Orange Free State in Bloemfontein.
He married Joan Cicely Haworth on 2 July, 1955 at the Anglican Cathedral of St Andrew and St May, Grahamstown.
