Hofsaal

A Hofsaal is the Dutch and Afrikaans name for a courtroom (literally: "court hall").

In the 19th century such rooms were on occasion used as the venue used for a variety of other community and social events.

Among those used for theatre and other performances have been:

The Hofsaal, Malmesbury

The venue and its uses

The courtroom in the Western Cape town of Malmesbury, used as a venue for performances by touring companies in the vicinity of Cape Town in the mid-19th century.

Performances taking there included:

On 20 September, 1869 the touring company of the amateur association Door Yver Bloeit de Kunst performed De Korporaal en Het Dienstmeisje (Anon.) and De Kluizenaar op Formentera (Von Kotzebue) there.
