Biography
Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance
He was probably a regular performer for an (unnamed) amateur company of performers from the local garrison, active for charity purposes in the late 1860s and early 1870s.
The only reference found to Biphen specifically is when the company presented a benefit performance for him in the Theatre Royal, Main Barracks (formerly the Garrison Theatre) in Cape Town on 17 April, 1871. The plays performed on this occasion were Who Stole the Pocket-book?, or A Dinner for Six (Morton), Wanted, A Young Lady (Suter) and An Englishman's House is his Castle (Morton).
