A cinema which also doubled as a venue for plays and performances. For example, Gracie Fields performed there in 1935. ****
The Criterion, Durban
Corner of Field Street and Esplanade, Durban. Built as a Bio-vaudeville (see Music Hall), the Criterion opened 20/5/1912. Popular Durban venue, used by such South African companies as the Gwen ffrangçon-Davies / Marda Vanne Company, Munro-Inglis Company, Brian Brooke Company, the Natal Theatre Workshop Company and visiting companies such as the Old Vic. Demolished 1953.
