Whether this was a locally written work, or an imported piece, is unknown, but it was apparently a propaganda piece intended to counter excessive drinking in society.

Performance history in South Africa
1863: Performed in the Temperence Hall by the Cape Town Total Abstinence Society in October, it was apparently a successful enough to be repeated in the Music Hall on Church Square later the month.
