As Mad as a Hatter is a play by an unnamed author (possibly Francis Albert Marshall (1840–1889)[1]).

The original text

A farce entitled Mad as a Hatter, by Francis Albert Marshall (1840–1889)[2] was produced at the Royalty Theatre, 7 Dec. 1863.

Performance history in South Africa

1870: Performed as As Mad as a Hatter by "Members of the Legislative Assembly", aided by the brass band of the 11th Regiment, in the Oddfellows Hall, Cape Town, "for the purpose of aiding in the establishment of a dramatic club in Cape Town". It was accompanied by a performance of The Irish Tutor (Butler) by the same company.
