George Louw (1939-) [1]. Playwright, poet, journalist.

Biography

He was born on the farm Meintjiesplaas in the Sutherland district in 1939. He attended school in Cape Town. He is a nephew of N.P. van Wyk Louw and W.E.G. Louw.

Training

He studied at the University of Stellenbosch and continued his post-graduate studies at the University of Cape Town.

Career

He worked for Die Burger, lectured at the University of Cape Town and later joined the editorial team of Die Huisgenoot.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

Plays include Die Generaal, 1972; ‘n Skip is Ons Beloof, 1969; the one-act play Komete.

Awards, etc

In 1963 he was awarded the Eugène Marais Prize for his poetry. He won the W.A. Hofmeyr prize for 'n Skip is Ons Beloof.
