Me and My Girl

Me and My Girl is a musical with music by Noel Gay and its original book and lyrics by Douglas Furber and L. Arthur Rose.

The original text

Set in the late 1930s, the play tells the story of an unrefined cockney named Bill Snibson, who found out that he was the 14th heir to the Earl of Hareford.

The original opened in the West End in 1937, was turned into a film in 1939 (entitled The Lambeth Walk), and was revived on the West End briefly in 1952.

Translations and adaptations

The musical's book was revised by Stephen Fry with Mike Ockrent and opened in the West End in 1985 and Broadway in 1986, winning numerous awards in England and the USA. This text published by Samuel French.

Performance history in South Africa

November / December (?) 1973: Produced by Helen Mann and presented at the Gelvandale Community Centre.

1993: Performed at the State Theatre Opera Pretoria in December 1993, directed by Lisa Kent with Edward Baker-Duly and Lana Green in the leads, and musical direction by Graham Scott.

2004: Performed at the Playhouse Drama from June 29 to July 4 by pupils of Northcliff High School in Johannesburg, directed by Nick Jourdan.
