The comedy Charles the Second, or The Merry Monarch by John Howard Payne (1791-1852) opened in Covent Garden on May 27th 1824, with Charles Kemble as the king.

Betty, a French Ballet version of the comedy Charles the Second by M. Mazilier, first produced in Paris at the Academie Royale de Musique, as a vehicle for the dancer Sophie Fuoco, was brought to London as a “grand Ballet” , the re-production now called The Wags of Wapping (Since the title "Betty" did not work in English) and first performed at the Drury Lane Theatre on 16 November, 1846.
