(1861-1941) Clergyman, writer and cultural theorist. From 1897-1937 head of the Free Protestant (Unitatrian) Church in Cape Town, he was a strong pacifist, reformer and advocate of voting rights for blacks. Had a strong belief in the humanising value of literature, drama and music and wrote a number of books on this, including The Ethical and Religious Value of the Drama (1925).
