Avril Angers
(1918-2005) British actress, comedienne, singer and dancer. Born in Liverpool, Angers' long and successful career in showbusiness began in variety, since here parents were variety artists. Once dubbed Britain's answer to Lucille Ball, she was a great exponent of revue, musicals, cabaret and TV and film comedy. During the Second World War she was a member of ENSA, touring the remotest parts of West Africa and was awarded the Africa Star for her work. One of the first stand-up comediennes she regularly appeared in cabaret. She visited South Africa to star in Not in the Book with Wilfrid Hyde-White (directed by David Pouson for Pieter Toerien, 1974).
