A Sleep of Prisoners

A Sleep of Prisoners is a 1951 play by English poet and playwright Christopher Fry (1907-2005) [1].

First performed at St Thomas' church in Regent Street, London in 1951 and later touring with Denholm Elliott and Stanley Baker.

Performance history in South Africa

1961: Presented by the Little Theatre Players at the Little Theatre in May, directed by Frank Spears.

1965: Staged by PACT, directed by Ron Jameson, with himself (Private David King), Ronald Wallace (Private Peter Abel), Arthur Hall (Corporal Joe Adams) and Siegfried Mynhardt (Private Tim Meadows).

1973: A CAPAB production of the play toured more than 20 centres in the northern Cape.

1997: ACTS (The African Community Theatre Service) presented a version directed by Peter Krummeck, with himself (Private David King), Ulric Charteris (Private Peter Abel), Matthew Roberts (Corporal Joe Adams) and Richard Farmer (Private Tim Meadows). The production was first staged at St. Paul's Church, Rondebosch on 25 June and subsequently at the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. George, Grahamstown from 8 to 12 July at the Grahamstown Festival.
