The Sultan, or A Peep into the Seraglio is a farce in two acts by Isaac Bickerstaffe (1733 – 1812?)[1].

The original play
Based on Solyman le Second from the Contes Moraux by J. F. Marmontel, the play was acted at the Theatres Royal in Drury-Lane and Covent-Garden in 1775. Published in London by C. Dilly,1787.

Performance history in South Africa
1802: Performed in The African Theatre on 12 October by the "Thespian Society" of the Cape Town Garrison, also known as the Garrison Players. F.C.L. Bosman (1928, p. 69), citing it in Dutch as "De Sultan, of Een Kykje in het Serail", gives the English title wrongly as The Sultan, or A Peep in the Seraglio). The evening's entertainment also continued with a performance of Alfred, or The Magic Banner by O'Keefe. (Again cited in Dutch by Bosman as "Koning Alfred, of De Betoverde Banier")
