CHERNIAVSKY, Alex. Impresiaro, dancer. Born in Russia, son of Poppa Cherniavsky. Largely responsible for the emergence of ballet in South Africa. Arrived in 1912 as a member of a dance trio that toured South Africa, giving no less than six hundred performances. After the tour he settled in South Africa and because of his family's fame in Europe he became a formidable impresiaro. Later became involved with I.W. Schlesinger. He also brought Anna Pavlova to South Africa.
