The school

Paarl Gimnasium is a school in Paarl, Western Cape, South Africa. Originally founded as School for boys , by Rev. van Lingen founded the school in the centre of town in 1858. The school boasts a considerable list of sporting achievements and has produced some of South Africa's top Rugby players including Schalk Burger, Jean De Villiers, Marius Joubert and De Wet Barry. The primary school section of Gimnasium was founded in 1858, with the High School being founded much later. The school was established by Rev. Van Lingen as a Dutch Christian school for boys. In the mid 30's the school's language of education shifted to Afrikaans. After the high school section was completed the school allowed the first female learner to enroll in 1971. Paarl Gimnasium High School is now one of South Africa's top sporting schools and takes part in the enormous interschools tournament against Paarl Boys' High School (also a sporting and academic giant in South Africa and also situated in Paarl) which attracts more than 30 000 spectators every year and which virtually grinds the town to a halt.

The school hall and auditorium

The school hall and especially the auditorium are used for performances by the school children as well as other grouops. The auditorium is used for events during the annual Paarl Cultivaria festival.
