The original text
Set in Kimberley in 1899, it is a play that explores a variety of themes in an imagined relationship between Cecil John Rhodes and a young Sol T. Plaatjie when Plaatje takes a job as the ailing mining magnate's typist during the Siege of Kimberley in 1899.

Performance history in South Africa
2008: An early draft was performed as a reading at the Cape Town's Baxter Theatre in 2008.
2012: Produced as a professional playreading at the PANSA/NLDTF Festival of New Writing held at Durban's Catalina Theatre, where it walked away with three awards. Directed by Caroline Smart with Nicholas Lorentz (Rhodes), Nhlakanipho Manqele (Plaatje), Roger Service, Frank Graham and Darren King.
2013: Produced at the National Arts Festival, Grahamstown, in the Arena Programme. Directed by Caroline Smart with Martin le Maitre as Cecil John Rhodes, Nhlakanipho Manqele as Sol Plaatje, Peter Gardner as Kekovich, Frank Graham as Dr Smart and Adam Doré as a news vendor.
2014: Produced at the National Arts Festival in the NG Kerk Hall in Grahamstown, directed by Caroline Smart, with David Dukas (Rhodes), Sipho Mahlatshana (Plaatje), Greg Parvess and Frank Graham.
2015: A season at Johannesburg's Theatre on the Square.
