(1924-2009) World renowned British stage and film comedian and actor. Born in Tottenham, England, he came from a background of poverty. Went to primary school in Chingford, then attended the Italia Conti Academy. Began acting on stage at 13 and in films at 14. His early film work was mainly comedy, and he is perhaps best remembered for his roles in the “Doctor” and “Carry On” series of film farces. He later went on to do more serious and varied work. In 1969 he came to South Africa to star in Rex Garner’s productions of Chase Me Comrade and The Man Most Likely To at the Academy in 1969. He later returned to star in Canaries Sometimes Sing for Pieter Toerien at the André Huguenet in 1981.
