The Sorcerer

The Sorcerer [1] is a comic opera by Gilbert and Sullivan. It opened on 17 November 1877 at the Opera Comique [2] in London, where it ran for 178 performances.

The original text

The plot of The Sorcerer is based on a Christmas story, An Elixir of Love, that Gilbert wrote for The Graphic [3] magazine in 1876.

Performance history in South Africa

1969: Staged by the Cape Town Gilbert and Sullivan Society, directed by Billie Jones, in the Labia Theatre.

1978: Staged by the Cape Town Gilbert and Sullivan Society, directed by Helen Houghton, in the Claremont Town Hall.

1990: Staged by the Cape Town Gilbert and Sullivan Society, directed by Helen Houghton, in the Baxter Theatre.
