The South African Commercial Advertiser

Often simply referred to as The Commercial Advertiser, it was South Africa's first independent newspaper, founded in Cape Town and edited by Thomas Pringle and John Fairbairn, printed by George Greig. The first issue appeared on 7 January 1824. The newspaper twice banned (5 May 1824 to 31 August 1825, and 10 March 1827 to 3 October 1828), by order of the Governor at the Cape, Lord Charles Somerset.

After a series of mergers and name changes ( The Cape Town Mail, and from 1860, The Commercial Advertiser and Mail), it finally ceased publication in 1879.
