Brümilda van Rensburg

VAN RENSBURG, Brümilda. (1958-****). Actress. Obtained a BA Drama Honours degree from Pretoria University. Received the Ludwig-Binge Medal for Acting in 1977 and 1978.

(30 October 1958-) Actress for stage and screen. Born in Phillipolis in the Karoo, attended Afrikaans Hoër Meisieskool (Afrikaans Higher Girls School) in Pretoria, then completed a BA Drama and Honnours BA Drama (both cum laude) at the University of Pretoria. Began work as an actress for CAPAB in 19**, staying for three years. She later worked on a free-lance basis for PACT, the Market Theatre and the Baxter Theatre. A sensual red-headed actress, often cast in vampish roles. Among the many plays she did for CAPAB are Die Oresteia Trilogie (winning the Fleur du Cap Award for her role as Cassandra), Kom Terug, klein Sheba ("Come Back Little Sheba" -1981), Poppie Nongena, Die Plaasvervangers ("The Replacements"), Kinkels innie Kabel (a Cape Afrikaans version of A Comedy of Errors by William Shakespeare), Faust, The Miracle Worker, Die Fisici ("The Physicists"), Mooi Maria ("Beautiful Maria"), and Faan se Trein ("Faan's train"). For the Baxter Agamemnon, Siener in die Suburbs ("Seer in the suburbs"), Send for Dolly and Hamlet. For the Market Exit the King, Patchers and Casper and the Electric Chair. For PACT Blanche in Begeerte (Afrikaans version of "A Streetcar named Desire"), Exit the King, Die Koggellaar ("The Taunter"), Antigone, Last Summer at Bluefish Cove, Kalkoen se kind (Lit "The child of a turkey "), Die Groot Wit Roos ("The Big White Rose"), Die Sakeman van Venesië ("The Merchant of Venice"). In 19** she began her television career, appearing in a range of dramas and soapa operas over the years. These include Ballade vir 'n Enkeling II ("Ballad for a Loner") , Vyfster ("Five Star"), Wolwedans in die Skemer ("The wolf's dance at nightfall"). Became one of the key performers and a household name in the long-lasting soap opera Egoli. In the 2000s she returned to theatre on a freelance basis, to work with Marthinus Basson, and others, on plays such as Die Soen ("The Kiss") and Om Goodbye te Sê ("To say goodbye"), Koggelmanderman (Pieter Fourie , 2003), . Also does motivational speaking and offers drama courses. At one time married to writer and playwright Terblanche Jordaan. VAN RENSBURG, Brumilda. She starred in Die Sakeman van Venesië at the Alexander in 1991. She starred in Bobby Heaney’s production of Die Trem se Naam: Begeerte, an Afrikaans translation of Tennessee Williams's A Streetcar Named Desire together with Marius Weyers for TRUK in May 1985.

In 2012 she published her autobiography Brumilda Vyftig, Vurig & Fabulous, written in collaboration with Annelize Steyn.
