It openend on 14 February 1981 with Weiss Doubell as the first director of the theatre. Popular for symphonic music and opera. Marius Weyers and Sandra Prinsloo under Francois Swart’s direction starred in an Afrikaans translation of Hamlet here for PACT in 1987.
