(?*) Dutch labourer who stayed at the Cape for a few months while en route to the Dutch Indies in 1825. While there he wrote a report of his impressions, including a dialogue to illustrate the "bastardised Dutch”spoken at the Cape: this dialogue possibly represents the first dramatic use of Afrikaans, and perhaps the first consciously written Afrikaans text of any sort.
