Children of the Mist
Children of the Mist is an indigenous performance piece.
Original text
It tells the story of how the Khoi-Khoi chief sat cross-legged on his rock for hours while looking down on to this old world. He saw children in indigenous clothing dancing while also playing indigenous instruments, and how that was lost with the advent of colonisation in the Cape in 1652. Colonial greed chased the Griqua children away into the mist. It was only when democracy came to South Africa that the Griqua were able to resuscitate their lost culture and indigenous dance - the 'rieldans' - which is showcased in Children of the Mist. The show also includes a modern form of the indigenous Ikhapara dance which is a dance of love between men and women of the Khoi-Khoi people.
