Biography
Born Karen-Christine Meiring in Pretoria , but generally known as Kabous Meiring, she is the daughter of journalist Martie Meiring and architect Hannes Meiring.
She studied drama at the University of Stellenbosch, completing a B.Dram in 1998 and was a Student Representative Council member for Culture in 1999.
Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance
Her career began as presenter for the television program Oulap se rooi, and radio work as presenter of Vloerplan and RSG-kuns. Since then she has had a number of positions as presenter for a range of programmes on MNet and KykNet, including Prontuit, Varstrap, Dagbreek
Kabous also ventured into the publishing industry, working as an advertising coordinator at NB Publishers,
She then turned her hand to film production, when she was invited by Life in a Bulb to direct a short film, Drukkersbloed (2012) for the Silver Screen Festival.
She has since gone on to work as a freelance producer and director, on various magazine and reality series, and has often coordinated and facilitated discourse series and panel discussions for arts festivals, and other events.
has for almost 10 years now been the discussion facilitator of the programme Prontuit on KykNET, as well as presenter of numerous others such as Megaboere, among others. She is mostly concerned with social issues related to South Africa, but also the state and potential of the world in general. Kabous has led various panel discussions as part of congresses and Afrikaans art festivals, of which the topics ranged from identity, language and politics to the arts. She is also a film director and producer. Kabous has always believed that a university in South Africa, like elsewhere in the world, is an inseparable part of the country. For her the University of Stellenbosch is an excellent example of this. She is a proud member of the Drama Class of 1998, and Student Representative Council member for Culture in 1999.
