John Cartwright
John Cartwright (194*-)is a scholar, teacher and academic administrator, as well as a creative writer and performing artist.

Biography
He studied at the University of Cape Town and Oxford University,
In 1965 he became a lecturer in English at the University of Stellenbosch for a few years, and in that period performed in plays put on by the newly founded Drama Department and local theatre associations. He has since had many years of experience as teacher, researcher and administrator in universities in South Africa, the United Kingdom and Canada, and among other postitions held, was Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Cape Town (1991-1994) and head of the English Department (1996-1997).
In 2001 he began working on innovative projects in community policing and is currently a Research Fellow at the Global Risk Governance programme at the University of Cape Town.

Besides his academic activities, he has long had an interest in theatre and performance,

Stage roles over the years have included Faust (UTS, Stellenbosch, 1966), Die Koning Sterf (UTS, Stellenbosch, 1966), The Rivals (UTS, Stellenbosch, 1967) and Arms and the Man (UTS, Stellenbosch, 1968).
As playwright
He wrote A New Birth (a nativity play, 1982), .
