Frank Wheeler was a comedian of the highest rank, with a penchant for "gagging" that often left his company helpless with laughter.

According to D.C. Boonzaier (1923), he was a superb improvisational comedian, stating that "(F)ew who witnessed their farewell performance of The Girls of Gottenburg in the Opera House stage of Cape Town ever forgot the scene where the entire company, joining in on the hilarity of the audience, abandoned all pretense at acting and abandoned themselves to the mirth he had introduced 'outside the lines' ".
