The original text
Written in 1930 and published in Plattdeutsch (Low German) as Swienskomödi "Een Buernstück in dree Ennens" ("a rural piece in three acts") by Quickborn, Hamburg (1930, 1933). Also known in its High German version of Krach um Jolanthe ("Fuss about Jolanthe"), and published in this form in 1933 by Drei-Masken-Verlag, Berlin, and by Deutscher Laienspiel-Verlag, Weinheim in 1952. Filmed in 1934 by Carl Fröhlich.
Translations and adaptations
Translated into Afrikaans as Bohaai oor Jolanthé by ** in 1942, and as Bohaai oor 'n Otjie by ** in 1956.
Performance history in South Africa
1937: A production by Volksteater was directed by Paul R. Skawran.
1942: Performed in Afrikaans as Bohaai oor Jolanthé by K.A.T. in August. Directed by Mavis de Villiers.
1956: Performed in Afrikaans as Bohaai oor 'n Otjie by the National Theatre Organisation. Directed by Anna Neethling-Pohl with Reenen van Niekerk (in the lead as Krischan Lamken), Berdine Grunewald, Elsa Fouché, Siegfried Mynhardt, Eghard van der Hoven, Cor Eggink, Cobus Rossouw, Pieter Geldenhuys and André de Jongh. After the series of regional performances the production was taken on tour, retaining Reenen van Niekerk in the lead, while the other roles were taken by Mathilde Hanekom, Danie Smuts, Elma Krynauw, Gilyan Francesco, Jaco van der Westhuizen, André de Jongh and David Botha.
