Don Barrigo

Don Barrigo (June 12, 1906, London, England – May 4, 1977, South Africa) was a jazz saxophonist (tenor, alto & bass), clarinettist, flautist and comedian who settled in South Africa.

Biography

He was a competent tenor saxophonist and was active in New York and London in the 20s and 30s. Among the artists with whom he played and sometimes recorded were Joe Venuti and Eddie Lang. He also played with Don Parker (1926), Harry and Sid Roy, Freddy Schweitzer (Band), Billy Mayerl, Percival Mackey (Sept. 1931), Serge Glykson (in France, 1932), Louis Armstrong (1932), Bert Bowen (1933), Howard Jacobs (summer 1933), Nat Gonella in 1935/6 and with Al Bowlly in 1937. In 1940, he was a member of Maurice Winnick’s dance band alongside Ted Heath.

1957: Played in Stanley Nathan's cabaret production at the City Hall, Port Elizabeth, Tickle the Kitty which celebrated 50 years of the South African Bowls Tournament in Port Elizabeth.
