This is a general term that after 1948 came to refer to the general opposition to the racist philosophy, activities and regime that dominated South Africa from colonial times. The term was really established internationally by what became known as the Anti-Apartheid Movement (AAM)[1], which involved a number of movements, activities and attitudes that opposed South African apartheid.

The term is also used more widely, to refer to any oppositional stance or activity. Thus one might refer to someone's "anti-apartheid attititude" or an "anti-apartheid novel, film or play"
