Carnival is a term broadly referring to a specific kind of public event and entertainment.
The name is derived from the Latin phrase carnem levāre (to put away meat, i.e. referring to the period of fasting), becoming carnevale in Italian and from there spreading across the world in a range of forms (carnival, karnival, karneval, etc.).
