Garalt MacLiam
Garalt MacLiam (1937-2014) was a (Irish-born?) South African playwright, director, actor, author and theatre critic. He was well-known as the theatre critic for the Star Tonight newspaper for many years. He was president of the South African Union of Journalists (SAUJ) in the 1990's.
Plays written by him include The Indian Rope Trick and Diary of a Madman, which was adapted by MacLiam from Gogol’s short story of the same title and in which he performed in its first production. Plays that he wrote and directed include One Friday in Jerusalem, staged Upstairs at the Market in 1976 and Meredith's Money, staged at the Montecasino Theatre in 2005.
