First performed in Paris, at the Théâtre de l'Odéon, on 11 October, 1871.
Translations and adaptations
Translated into Dutch by an unknown author. Nothing is known of the Dutch version, except that a performance of a one act play by this name (ascribed to Ta dramatic sketch called Jean Marie (no author mentioned), with a work called "Genraalsvrouwtje" (probably Het Generaalsvrouwtje by Henri t'Sas), is recorded by the Rederijkerskamer 'Nut en Genoegen' te Holwierde on 14 January, 1921.

Performance history in South Africa
1908: Performed in Dutch as Jean Marie by Onze Taal in the Empress Theatre, Pretoria, on 18 June (the author's name wrongly given as "Theurieb" by Bosman, 1980:485). Also performed were De Boezemvriend(Praga) and Voor het Diner (Simons-Mees).
