(1945-) Novelist, critic, academic. A highly respected academic, a leading figure in the transitional phase and the post-apartheid endeavour to identify and support a “South African aesthetic”. His collection of stories (Fools and Other Stories) was published in 1983. Taught at Denver Colorado, the University of Lesotho and in 2000???* was appointed Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Town. **
