(18**-18**) A book merchant and owner of an English “reading-library” in Cape Town, ticket agent and possibly an amateur performer.

His business appears tot have moved about considerably, the address being given inter alia as Longmarket Street, Herengracht and Burg Street in various advertisements and reports.

Contribution to South African theatre

His business was often cited as the ticket office for theatrical and other performances.

He may also have been one of the local amateurs used by the Garrison Players, for there is a performer simply listed as "Howell" in two plays (Exchange no Robbery and The Midnight Hour performed by them on 8 October, 1825. (Interestingly, this is the only person listed not given a title in the programme.)
