A comedy in one act by Alphonse Martainville (Alphonse-Louis-Dieudonné Martainville) (1777-1830).

The original text

First performed at Le Théâtre de Montansier-Variétés, in 1803. Published in Paris, by Barba, 1803.

Translations and adaptations

Anonymous translation into Dutch as De Belagchelyke Zelfmoord ("The Silly Suicide"). Rotterdam: Jan Hendriksen, (no date, but circa 1800, most probably 1803 or 1804.

Performance history in South Africa

1815: Performed in Dutch (the title recorded by F.C.L. Bosman as De Belachelyke Zelfmoord) on Monday 4 September 1815 by Honi Soit Qui mal Y Pense, led by C.E. Boniface. As afterpiece to De Lauwerkrans, of Het gezag der Wetten (Ziegler).
