A national trade union initiated at the third Annual Conference of the South African Student Organisation (SASO) in July 1972 and established in the same year.
Initially strongly linked to SASO and the BPC. The Union followed a Blacks-only policy and stressed that it is basically concerned with African workers. It still exists.
Some members, such as Saths Cooper, contributed to political theatre activities in South Africa.
