Completed high school at ***. He started performing in amateur plays while at high school.

After beginning a course in Economics and finance, he switched to drama at the University of Stellenbosch, completing a B.Dram/B.A. (?*) in acting (with specializations in puppetry and cabaret) and an Honnours Degree in Educational Theatre from the same university.

Career

South African Erik de Waal lives in Cape Town, but spends most of the year performing for audiences of all ages in theatres, at festivals and schools around the world. and has written, directed and performed in more than 50 professional productions in the last fifteen years. He has been performing in Canada since 1999 from Montreal and Ottawa in the East to Vancouver Island in the west and Dawson City and Whitehorse in the North. He has performed to enthralled audiences in South Africa, Canada, England, Ireland and Turkey and more than 150 000 people on five continents had been thrilled by his energetic form of storytelling theatre using masks, puppets, marionettes and a whole lot of imagination.

His educational children's show, African Folktales with Erik de Waal has played to half a million children on five continents since 2003. Written by: Erik de Waal

Presented by: YAP Theatre / Cape Town, South Africa Erik de Waal first performed in the Winnipeg Fringe Festival in 1999 and he's been coming back every year since. "It's become a part of my regular circuit and I've got an amount of people who come and see me every year," says the Cape Town native.

De Waal is presenting two shows, African Folk Tales with Erik de Waal for kids aged four to 10, with puppets and masks, and Erik de Waal's Tales from the Twilight for the grown-ups with ghost stories and adult content. The shows are popular as ever, with a number of sell-outs so far.
