Harry Vine
(b. Leyton, Essex, **/**/1889 – d. **/**/****). Actor. British-born Harry Vine who acted opposite Adele Fillis in the film version of H. De Vere Stacpoole’s novel The Vulture’s Prey (Dick Cruikshanks & William Bowden/1922), seems to have been a once-off actor and may only have been cast because he was married to Ms. Fillis. In fact, his full name was Harry Vine Gandar, whose father, H.J. Gandar, was a joint manager of the Union-Castle Line. In 1935 Harry was appointed Consul of Norway based in Mombasa and in 1939 he became a member of the Table Bay Harbour Advisory Board. Harry and Adele’s son, born in January 1915, was Laurence Gandar, the highly respected and crusading anti-apartheid editor of the Rand Daily Mail. (FO)
