Out at Sea

Out at Sea is a comedy by Polish dramatist, writer and cartoonist Slawomir Mrozek, (1930–2013) [1].

Not to be confused with the 1997 American romantic comedy film of the same name featuring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau.[2]

The original text

Three men find themselves on a raft in the middle of the ocean. Having something to eat is not a question of what... but whom. Someone has to be sacrificed and the three are struggling to find a 'just' and 'humane' way to decide for the right person.


Translations and adaptations

The translation into English by Nicholas Bethell was published by Samuel French.

Performance history in South Africa

Presented by the Rhodes University Drama Department in 1973, directed by Henry Goodman.
