The original text
A comic one-act play written during World War I about an Irish soldier in the British army returning home after winning the Victoria Cross and is used as part of a recruitment campaign among the Irish.
Published in a volume with, among other plays, Heartbreak House by Constable in 1931.
Performance history in South Africa
1970: Presented by CAPAB's Theatre in the Round Company in 35 towns in the Northern Cape, as far afield as Mafikeng and Port Nolloth. Directed by Pietro Nolte.
