Charles Duval

Charles Duval (1854 - 1889) was an Irish entertainer and actor who visited South Africa in the 1870s.

Biography

He was in South Africa when the 1st Boer War broke out and so he decided to join a British volunteer unit in the Transvaal. He became the editor of News of the Camp during the siege of Pretoria. Unfortunately he was drowned in the Red Sea.

Contribution to SA theatre, film, media and/or performance

Charles Duval enjoyed great popularity on account of his lectures, impersonations and musical performances. He wrote With a Show Through South Africa which was republished several times.
