Twee is Beter as Een (“Two are better than one”) is an Afrikaans one-act play by J.T. Martens.

The original text

A religious-didactic one-act play based on a Bible verse (Ecclesiastes 4: 9-10), dealing with the need for missionaries in Masjonaland. It tells of a middle-aged missionary doctor who convinces a nurse to accompany him and two friends on a missionary expedition.

Translations and adaptations

Performance history in South Africa

1967: Performed in the church in Wolseley.

1968: Performed in the Old Apostolic church in March 1968 by the local CJV (Christelike Jongeliede Vereniging = “Christian Youth Association”), a group that would become Môrester Amateur Toneelgroep (MAT), using the title of the play as their motto.

1968: Performed in Malmesbury in June 1968.
